Aurelius Training Courses on the NATO Yacht Aurelius II
The JWC Stavanger Sailing Club plans to offer unofficial certification courses for those wishing to learn to sail. The courses offer not only a chance to come away with a great set of skills under your belt but also a chance to enjoy the fantastic shores of the region with an unforgettably fun and challenging week.
Due to the closure of the Kiel Yacht Club we are unfortunately no longer able to provide official RYA certification at the Competent Crew and/or Day Skipper levels. However we have put a plan in place to offer training and certification for use of the NATO Yacht Aurelius II which closely mirror the necessary qualifications for RYA Competent Crew and allow the use of the Aurelius II by qualified club members.
The aim of the JWC Stavanger Sailing Club local ‘Competent Crew’ (Practical Course) is to introduce the complete beginner to cruising and to teach personal safety, seamanship and helmsmanship (steering a boat at different angles to the wind) to the level required to be a useful member of the crew of a cruising yacht. This will be undertaken over a combination of evening Club Sails and weekend trips. Final sign off or ‘check out’ for experienced sailors will be by the Club Training Officer.
Additionally, the club will be providing "familiarization training" for already qualified skippers. This will give qualified skippers a chance to refresh their knowledge and practical skills and to familiarize them with the handling of Aurelius II in order to safely operate the yacht
Completed training for Competent Crew will consist of 4 evenings (approximately 12 hours) with an experienced skipper while; Skipper Familiarization will consist of 1-2 evenings (approximately 3-6 hours) with an experienced skipper. The courses will take place on JSSC’s Hallberg Rassy 310, Aurelius II, which is berthed at Ulsnes on Hundvåg and you will sail within the Ryfylke area during the club sails. Weekend trips will provide the opportunity for night sailing and will provide opportunities to sail further out than the immediate area.
Course fees will be the standard club sail fee of 50nok/person. It is a course prerequisite that the trainee is a JSSC paid up member (either individual or family member).
The courses will cover the following topics on a rotating basis, usually covering 2-3 topics per evening.
